skin pigmentation sun spots and melasma

The reason behind uneven complexion… and what to do about it!

21 Sep 2018

When it comes to skin, the signs of ageing can start appearing sooner than you might think. You may not have deep frown lines or crow’s feet just yet, but uneven skin tone is one of the major signs of ageing. Yes, those big, uneven brown patches that can develop on your face and other parts of your body are actually a sign of ageing.

What are these uneven blotches and what should you do about them? Read on to find out more…

The problem of pigmentation

Sun spots, dark spots, age spots, melasma: there are many names that are associated with these signs of ageing but they all fall under the heading of pigmentation.

So what is pigmentation and what causes it? Essentially, pigmentation is caused by sun exposure. UVA rays penetrate deep into your skin, stimulating cells to produce a pigment called Melanin. Melanin is responsible for the glorious tan you picked up during your summer holiday, but it also results in those unwanted, uneven dark patches.

It’s also interesting to note that pigmentation can sometimes take 10 to 20 years to develop – so sun spots that have recently become visible may have actually been caused when you were much younger!

For our female beauty seekers, you may be interested to know that pregnancy or the contraceptive pill can also trigger melasma, which are dark, irregular hyperpigmented areas. This is caused by altered hormone levels. If you have dark patchy spots on your upper lip or forehead, this may well be the cause.
